Entertainment: A Cross-Cultural Examination.
Fischer, Heinz-Dietrich, Ed.; Melnik, Stefan Reinhard, Ed.
This collection of 26 articles, written by mass communication experts from 12 countries, investigates various aspects of entertainment as communication, focusing on entertainment as provided by its currently most important source, mass media. The premise behind the essays is that there is no such thing as "pure entertainment," but that all entertainment contains political, social, and economic messages and values, intended or not. Contributors explore the content a communicator produces and the content an audience uses, and discuss entertainment from such perspectives as the following: how the mass media have affected entertainment and vice versa; how entertainment can be approached theoretically; the social and political functions of entertainment; and the relationship between entertainment production and market mechanisms or mass audience demand.
