Missouri State Dept. of Elementary and Secondary Education, Jefferson City.
This report examines the historical background, the current status, and the future outlook for urban-metropolitan schools in Missouri. The phenomenon of urbanization and its impact on human group living, including the educational process is explored. A demographic view of the five metropolitan centers of Missouri is provided in terms of the populations of these centers, their composition, and their shifts. Particular issues and concerns identified by the administrators of Missouri's urban-metropolitan schools are discussed in detail. These include financial concerns, student related concerns, community involvement and related issues, curriculum issues, teacher related concerns, administrative concerns, school desegregation-integration issues, and school legislation issues and problems. Recommendations and suggestions related to these concerns are made. In addition, descriptions of fifty-one effective, outstanding and exemplary programs and projects developed in a number of Missouri urban-metropolitan schools are summarized. (Author/EB)
