A Report on Flexible Calendar Program at Cosumnes River College, Los Rios Community College District.

As part of the Flexible Calendar Project, Cosumnes River College adopted a school calendar that provided for two 16-week semesters (the fall semester ending prior to Christmas recess) separated by a three-week intersession that was devoted to educational experimentation and professional staff development activities. After the second year (1977-78), students (N=1,024), faculty and support staff (N=60), and administrators (N=15) were asked to evaluate the overall desirability and convenience of the schedule and of ending the fall semester prior to Christmas vacation. In addition, students were asked about the sufficiency of time to complete course requirements and faculty and counselor availability. Faculty were asked about the need to revise course content to cover material in the shortened time; changes in student achievement and persistence, and in quality of instruction; problems of late registration; participation in staff development activities and its benefits; effects on communication; and adequacy of planning, record-keeping procedures, and activity information. Administrators were asked about effects on student articulation, staff development, and communication; and to evaluate staff development activities in terms of planning, information dissemination, effective faculty use, and faculty accountability. Results of each of the surveys are provided in bar graphs. (AYC)
