Discourse Analysis for Language Learners. Australian Review of Applied Linguistics, Vol. 1, No. 2.
Hartmann, R. R. K.
Discourse analysis, a field that reflects an interest in language as text and social interaction, is discussed. Discourse analysis deals with the way language varies from one communicative situation to another; textological analysis deals with the internal organization of such discourse in terms of grammar and vocabulary. Assumptions in contrastive textology are presented. An area of focus is the problem of whether and how certain categories of texts correlate with certain skills that learners should acquire. Different orientations concerning translation in language teaching are the classical model, the reform movement, the audiolingual method, the cognitive code, and the eclectic approach. (SW)
