Guidelines for the Provision of Occupational and Physical Therapy Services for Handicapped Children in the Educational System of Maryland.
Maryland State Dept. of Education, Baltimore. Office of Special Education.
The guidelines address the qualifications, training, and functions of occupational and physical therapists in working with handicapped children in Maryland public schools. A section on personnel lists job specifications (salary scale, education, experience, employment conditions, examples and essential requirements of work) for four levels of related services specialists. Credentialing and competencies are discussed, recruitment procedures reviewed, and accountability aspects briefly considered. Two final sections address the therapists' role in the identification of handicapped children and examine the nature of required facilities. Six recommendations are made regarding the role of therapists in the identification of handicapped children, including the automatic referral of all positive outcomes of motor development screening to occupational therapy/physical therapy for more precise assessment.
