Planning for Applications of Communications Satellites in Education.

This report of a project to develop and test a prototype system for the delivery of continuing education (CE) to two defined target groups of registered dietitians includes user needs, alternative approaches, the operational plan, the management plan, and personnel. Major tasks involved in the project are described: (1) development, implementation, and evaluation of 36 competency-based CE programs; (2) progression toward an operational communication satellite system; (3) utilization of networks for the necessary communication satellites through institutional relationships already initiated; (4) establishment of a program advisory committee to determine appropriate content areas for CE delivery; and (5) marketing consultation from satellite business systems. Appendices include STARDATE questionnaires, Focus Group instrument survey on CE needs, assumptions and sources used for cost analysis, STARDATE project description, assessment of interpersonal skills, and earth station site maps for experimental areas.
