Role of Self-Help Organizations in VR with Severely Disabled Individuals. Final Report, September 1, 1977 through August 3, 1978.
Varela, Rita A.
The report details the design, the implementation, and evaluation of three workshops on the role of the disability rights movement attended by 48 vocational rehabilitation (VR) state agency decision makers. Among the goals of the project listed were to make state VR agencies more familiar with the skills and potential of disabled self-advocacy organizations and to provide post-workshop technical assistance to both agencies and self-advocates. A questionnaire used to evaluate the workshops revealed that 86.9% of the respondents felt that materials distributed at the workshop would help them maintain closer ties with self-advocacy groups and the same percentage felt that there was a need to provide follow-up training to other agency personnel. The main portion of the report includes the following appendixes: an address, "Two Actors in Search of a Playwright" (F. Bowe); the trainers manual on "The Role of Self-Help Groups in Rehabilitation"; the results of the follow-up evaluation survey, copies of letters, and an annotated bibliography. (PHR)
