Selection, Retention, Graduation--Is It Working?

The predictive usefulness of certain scales of the Personal Orientation Inventory (POI) may be greater than generally believed. The evaluation of one program of selection, retention and graduation of Masters-Level students determined the relationship between selection criteria and rated effectiveness. Approximately one half of the criteria employed in this process are positively and significantly related to rated effectiveness, which, in turn, is determined by having faculty and site supervisors rate each student. Questionnaires subsequently mailed to graduates and their immediate supervisors, yielded data which indicated that the program is adequate in most training areas and that competencies of the graduates are rated higher by the employer than by either graduate or faculty.
