The Family Education Program at Intermediate School 55. A Report to the Salgo-Noren Foundation on the Operation and Results of the Family Education Program, September, 1975, Through June, 1977.
Bedford-Stuyvesant Restoration Corp., Brooklyn, NY.
Summarized in this report is the effect parent participation in the Family Education Program at Intermediate School (I.S.) 55 in New York had on student achievement in the school during 1975-1977. Results of the first year of the program, 1974-75, indicated a relationship between parent participation and improved student achievement in mathematics and reading levels. In the 1975-77 program, however, there was no meaningful difference in the achievement levels of those students whose parents did participate as compared to those whose parents did not. This finding is attributed to the small number of students for whom pre and post test scores were available and the small number of students whose parents participated in the workshops and parent events. Nonetheless, there were benefits, which included a decrease in serious disciplinary problems, the development of a vehicle for the participation of parents, teachers and students in the decision making process, and the establishment of specific instructional goals and objectives. Appendices include tables of data collected, listings of parent attendance at workshops or events for 1975-76 and 1976-77, outlines of events, samples of forms, letters and publicity used in the Family Education Program, a parents' association monthly newsletter, and records of the National Advisory Council on the Education of Disadvantaged Children visit to the Family Education Program.
