Texas Assessment Project. Summary Report.

Findings are summarized from the statewide assessment of Texas students' achievement in mathematics, reading, citizenship awareness, and writing skills. For reading and mathematics achievement, criterion-referenced tests were developed. Test items from exercises developed by the National Assessment of Educational Programs (NAEP) were used to assess achievement in citizenship and writing. Results in all four areas are analyzed according to state geographic regions, family income, ethnic background (black, Mexican American, and other), sex of student, size and type of school district, per pupil expenditure, and languages spoken at home. For reading and mathematics achievement, other home factors, including reading materials at home, television viewing habits, homework, parents' education, and educational aspirations of the students are considered.
