A conversational skills training program for persons who admitted discomfort in most interpersonal situations and who found it difficult to initiate and maintain conversation was designed to teach these conversational behaviors: asking questions, expressing disagreement and agreement, paraphrasing, initiating conversations, giving compliments, and asking for behavior change. Instruction in each conversational behavior was conducted according to a curricular sequence that involved self-monitoring, observation of models, covert rehearsal, behavior rehearsal, and practice of target behaviors. Although the subjects were evaluated consistently throughout the program, a need for more systematic program evaluation was indicated. (References and classroom materials are appended.) (MAI)
