Usage in Dictionaries and Dictionaries of Usage.
Creswell, Thomas J.
To provide an authority on usage, this book presents an analysis of the treatment of American English as it appears in a number of dictionaries and usage guides. The first chapter presents brief sketches of the usage guides and studies that provided the basis for this compilation and discusses the organization of the book. After a resume of the background and claims of authoritativeness and completeness of the "American Heritage Dictionary" (AHD), the second chapter describes the procedures used in arriving at judgments on usage, discusses the selection of items submitted to a usage panel, analyzes the choice of panel members, and suggests the value of using panel opinions as a guide to usage. Chapter three analyzes the treatment of the same items that were described above as they appear in nine other dictionaries. Each dictionary is described individually and judgments are compared with those expressed in the AHD. The same process is applied to ten usage guides and studies in chapter four. The concluding chapter considers the treatment of all of the locutions as a whole and draws final conclusions as to objectivity, reliability, and authority in the treatment of usage. Seven appendixes and 33 tables are included. (MAI)
