Exploration of Cognitive Structures Common to Both Language and Sensorimotor Modes of Behavior. Final Report.
Greenfield, Patricia
The three projects described in this paper were based on the intrinsic connection between language and the structure of perception and action. The first project explored the role of nonverbal frameworks in the development of communication between mother and child, beginning with the first word. It emphasized the role of the mother in the creation of the nonverbal context--action, objects, locations--that make early communication possible. The other projects investigated the relationship between the perception of information and semantic choice. One tested the role of information in semantic choice at the one-word stage (between one and two years of age), while the other explored the role of information at later stages of language development.
