Designing and Implementing an Orientation and Homeroom Guidance Program for Parker Junior High School.
Delaney, John D.
The development and implementation of a formal homeroom program for seventh-grade students entering a two-year junior high school from five elementary schools is presented. Included are descriptions of: (1) the orientation phase, in which students as sixth graders in their respective elementary schools were provided slide shows, tours, and parent nights to prepare them for transition to junior high school; (2) the formal orientation program, with teacher's guide materials and handbooks for use with new seventh-grade students; (3) the guidance phase, which was designed to promote improved personal management skills during students' junior high years using values clarification as the central methodology; and (4) a formal program with resource packets created to help teachers assist students in the areas of decision making, handling frustration, dealing with consequences, peer relationships, adult relationships, and parent relationships. The appendix includes all teacher guide materials and the student handbook. (Author)
