Confronting the Future: A Conceptual Framework for Secondary School Career Guidance.

This book focuses on career guidance functions at the secondary school level. In chapter 1, some basic assumptions about career guidance as one aspect of guidance counseling are presented. Chapter 2 discusses the components of a student guidance system: assessment of the student's personal characteristics and the status of the student's career planning, selection of relevant courses, student review of courses, occupational sampling, self-monitoring of progress, guidance procedures, access to information, development of decision-making skills, financial planning, job placement, and post-high school follow-up. A conceptual model of the student development process during high school is described in chapter 3. The importance of the school and its staff in career guidance, in both a traditional and a proposed school system, is the focus of chapter 4. Some impressions, problems, and ideas for implementation are presented in chapter 5. Chapter 6 discusses national priorities for research and development involving the required research studies, component development, and some recommendations about research and product priorities. Finally, chapter 7 contains the summary and conclusion followed by a bibliography and index. (CT)
