This document provides data on the offerings and enrollments in science and mathematics in the public high schools of the United States. The data presented are based on information received in 1958 from a randomly selected sample of public high schools. The 4,228 usable returns in science and the 4,254 in mathematics came from about 20% of the total number of public high schools in the U.S. This document consists of three major sections. The first section presents the offerings and enrollment data in science. The second section presents the offerings and enrollment data in mathematics. The third section includes the characteristics of the sample, national generalizations, and related studies. Many tables are included in each section to present data. The two questionnaires used are included in the appendix. (HM)
