The World of Books for Children: A Parent's Guide.
Hunt, Abby Campbell
Intended as a guide for parents and teachers in choosing books for children at specific age levels, this book provides an annotated list of over 2,000 children's books by 1,200 authors. Organized according to age levels, each chapter provides standard bibliographical citation, discussions of child development, norms for evaluating books, and suggested activities for each set of books. The first chapter discusses books for children from birth to age three and includes books on naming and concepts, goodnight books, and nursery rhymes. Among the books for ages three to five discussed in chapter two are counting, color, and ABC books; sex education, bible stories, and picture story books; and folk tales, fairy tales, fables, and myths. Chapter three lists books that first and second grade children can read themselves. The final and longest chapter lists books for third and fourth grade children according to such headings as personal problems and relations, mystery, fantasy and science fiction, poetry, ethnic books, animals, science and mathematics, ecology, sports, biographies, holidays, and jokes. The book also contains a directory of publishers and author and title indexes. (MAI)
