Strategy for the Development of Sex Education in Latin America.
The International Planned Parenthood Federation meeting report places priority on the development of sex education programs in Latin America. While regional and national circumstances clearly differ, it was felt that the steps described provide valuable guidelines on how a sex education program can be evolved while utilizing formal and non-formal educational structures. An analysis of common elements in various countries revealed that a sex education program develops through the following phases: perception of the need; association with others to supply information; awareness among a large number of people; implementation of co-ordinated action; official acceptance of sex education; and consolidation of all efforts. The report makes it clear that those responsible for organizing wide-ranging education programs at formal and informal levels need the support of private agencies and organizations capable of nurturing the program during its initial stages of development.
