Examined in this document are four phases of what are referred to as the counter environment, a new system of beliefs and counter institutions to care for people. The topics studied fall into the general areas of education, therapy, health care, and utopias. Free schools are discussed in terms of varied definitions, historical growth, basic philosophies, funding resources, structure, basic characteristics, teacher and student roles, and their potential future. Specific free schools are referred to. The basic ideologies of radical therapy are compared to those of conventional therapy. Emphasis is on the roles therapists in each play. Particular counter institutions referred to include collective communes, women's liberation centers, telephone hotlines, and crisis centers for youth. The growth of free clinics, reasons for their growth, their aims, their contributions, and their financial resources are discussed. A collage of vignettes about communal life are used in describing communes. Aspects of communal life dealt with include stability, philosophical and physical characteristics, family units, child raising, and communal relationships. An overview of commune success and/or failure factors is provided. A statement and bill of rights drawn up by the Mental Patients' Liberation Project is appended and a list of references is included.
