An Evaluation of Approval Plan Performance: The Acquisition of Titles in Political Science.
This study, done at the San Jose State University library, measures the effectiveness of an acquisitions approval plan, designed to acquire current books soon after publication without the time consuming, costly operation of title-by-title ordering, for a group of titles in political science. It also investigates the variation of titles received on approval plans among individual publishers, and between trade and academic publishers, and the possibility that a relationship exists between the subject class of the title and its supply on approval plans. Results show that only 61 percent of the titles expected actually arrived within a time period considered reasonable by the library. In regard to individual publisher performance, the overall results were poor with a very wide range of performance exhibited. Results should force a reevaluation of the effectiveness and reliability of approval plans. Extensive bibliographies of the titles received and those not received through the approval plans are appended to the study. (Author/MBR)
