Taking Stock 1977-78: Modern Languages in the Polytechnics.

The aim of the conference discussed in this report was to make a critical appraisal of the achievements of language teaching in the polytechnics and similar institutions, and to attempt to suggest lines for future development. All speakers were encouraged to be critical and provocative in order to stimulate conference discussions on how language teaching can be improved. After an opening address entitled "Modern Languages in the Polytechnics: Present and Future," specific addresses are presented along three themes with one or more speakers representing each theme. Summaries of discussion group reports for each theme are also presented. The first theme, "Where Have We Got To So Far?" includes a critical analysis of the achievements of language teaching in the polytechnics and other colleges. The second theme, "Languages and Social Sciences: How Can They Live Together?" encompasses two addresses, one on living with linguists and the other on bridging the gap. The final theme, "Languages in the Schools and in Higher Education: The Interface," covers output from schools, input to education, output from higher education, and feedback to schools. Conference conclusions, recommendations, and a list of participants are appended. (EJS)
