The proceedings of the Second Annual National Conference on Child Abuse and Neglect (1977) are presented. The first section contains discussions of the following delivery system-related topics: community resource development (planning community protective services, mobilizing communities, maximizing educational resources, approaching families-at-risk, starting local child abuse programs, family advocates, child abuse training); comprehensive services to families (model for family support system development, comprehensive emergency services, child abuse treatment, mechanisms for and effectiveness of intervention, crisis nurserys, foster care); services to special populations (multiproblem families, high-risk families, mentally retarded parents, child advocacy in the military, rural programs, urban programs); alternative approaches (lay therapy, the self-help movement); and management and staff development (case management evaluation, child abuse hotlines, case worker training, interview training, emotional involvement, the battered worker syndrome, mental health professionals). Part 2 deals with intervention strategies in the areas of client assessment (differentiating abusing and neglecting parents, predicting child abuse and neglect, assessing marital adjustment of abusive parents, assessing clinical screening instruments, assessing impulse control, identifying signals of stress in high-risk families) and treatment (medical role, a family systems approach, a counseling approach, a developmental approach, group therapy, treatment programs, student nurse home intervention programs, family resource centers).
