Looking Back at the First Year: A "Veteran" Principal's View. OSSC Bulletin Vol. 22, No. 6.
The first year in the principal's chair is professionally challenging and a stimulus to growth, but it can also be a lonely, frustrating experience. Dr. Margaret Nelson, principal of Reedville Elementary School in Aloha, Oregon, relates her experiences as a first-year principal that could be useful to anyone either considering or entering the field of educational administration. She discusses her experiences and makes recommendations in the following areas: management, evaluation, grievances, open-door policies, interpersonal relations, discipline, testing, conferences, grades, budgeting, maintenance, faculty meetings and staff relations, the relationship of the principal to the children, and the relationship of the community and the school. Although directed to new principals, this bulletin could also be of interest to superintendents, school board members, or anyone else involved in public school governance. (Author/LD)
