Children, Food, and Family Day Care: A Manual for Sponsorship of the Child Care Food Program in Licensed Family Day Care.
O'Konski, Gerry, Ed.
This manual provides detailed information on how local non-profit organizations can sponsor licensed family day care homes for participation in the federally funded Child Care Food Program. This program subsidizes the provision of nutritious meals to children who are not in school. The introductory section of the manual answers basic questions about the program, delineates program benefits, traces the program's legislative history, provides definitions for key terms, and presents a program overview. The second section deals with how to initiate sponsorship. Discussed are the intial steps in calculating the sponsor's reimbursement, the provider's reimbursement, administrative expenses, and financial feasibility. The third section presents (1) step by step information on how to file for sponsor and provider reimbursement; (2) brief suggestions for developing a program to train day care providers to meet USDA minimum nutritional requirements in the meals they serve and to manage the required recordkeeping; (3) steps for monitoring homes; and (4) information about the sponsor's program evaluation. Copies of the forms needed to complete the process of sponsoring a family day care home in the Child Care Food Program are included in the fourth section. The final section contains materials and resources for sponsors to use in their orientation and training programs. (JMB)
