Parents and Protectors: A Study in Child Abuse and Neglect.
Shapiro, Deborah
The report documents a study in which parents identified as abusive or neglectful were interviewed to examine the relationship between the dependent variable of reduction of abusive or neglectful behavior and the independent variables describing the families (N=171) and the services given. Chapter I provides an overview of the study design. Chapter II covers demographic variables and describes the socioeconomic status of the families at the time of the interview with respect to employment and housing, as well as involvement with the extended family and social relations. Chapter III centers on the abuse and neglect problem that resulted in agency involvement, the families' response to it, and the characteristics of the workers and the services they offered. Focused on in Chapter IV are findings relative to improvement of the parents, factors associated with successful outcomes, dubious outcome variables, and areas in which no differences were found. Chapter V looks at the differences among the types of parents served and at the differences in agency responses to these parents. A final chapter summarizes findings and discusses the implications for research, agency practice, and family policy. (SBH)
