Design and Implementation of a Field Service Program for the Moderately Mentally Handicapped.
Bachtel, Dolores H.; Smallwood, Wayne N.
A group of 20 middle school students worked to improve the bowling, skating, and swimming skills of 50 moderately mentally handicapped children, while also providing the handicapped children with increased individual interaction, and increased social self-management skills. Assessment instruments were designed to measure the objectives. The teacher assistants worked with the handicapped children one-half day per week from March-June, and each morning for three hours for the month of July. All objectives were met, and both teachers and teacher assistants felt the program deserved expansion and institutionalization. (Appendixes include, in part, the parents' survey, the skills checklist, a literature review, and a handbook.) (PHR)
