Language and Speech Difficulties of the Adolescent Learning Disabled. LD Series #2.
Sitko, Merrill C.; Gillespie, Patricia H.
Presented at the Montgomery County (PA) Intermediate Unit Conference on Learning Disabilities in the Secondary Schools, 1975, the document presents an interpretive literature review of the speech, language, and characteristics of the learning disabled adolescent. Aspects covered include definitions of language, language disabilities, and the learning disabled; sociocultural factors in language and learning disabilities; assessment of language and speech; language and speech characteristics of the learning disabled adolescent; and intervention strategies. The authors' orientation to language programing--based on in situ assessment of the child's linguistic strategies and a task-analytic approach to the development of linguistic skills that consider the interaction of teacher, child, material, and situational variables--is also discussed.
