Report of an Investigation into the Possibilities for Educational Development in Rhodesia-Zimbabwe After a Political Settlement.
A group of senior faculty members of the University of Rhodesia initiated a study of attitudes to education among certain influential sections of opinion within the country and the implications for future educational planning. The study began with the interviewing of selected witnesses with interests in educational policy from among the political parties, agriculture, industry, the professions, the trade unions, and other influential groups. The intention was to identify and examine focal attitudes and aspirations, rather than to attempt any statistical analysis of opinion regarding education through the population as a whole. A second stage in the study consisted of the holding of group discussions with educational and other groups to examine certain key questions that had emerged from the interview stage. Finally members of the faculty conducted a series of discussions among themselves, supported by pertinent data from Rhodesia and other developing countries. As a result of the discussions among faculty members, certain principles and general guidelines were formulated as likely to form an effective basis for future educational development in this country.
