To Defend a Form: The Romance of Administration and Teaching in a Poetry-in-the-Schools Program.
Kimzey, Ardis
Intended as a guide for educators interested in initiating a poetry in the schools program, this book is organized into four parts. The first two parts narrate the poet-author's experiences in beginning such a program in North Carolina, outline techniques for presenting poetry in the classroom, and offer numerous samples of student writing. Part three is an annotated bibliography of sources dealing with poetry, teaching, and education that the author found useful in teaching poetry and creative writing. The list also includes pertinent children's books, textbooks, and workbooks suitable for use in activities related to poetry writing. The five appendixes that comprise part four include the following: sample introductory letters, general information, guidelines, and evaluation forms used in beginning the poetry program; information sent to participating poets, including guidelines, expense forms, and evaluation sheets; the letter to the principals that accompanied anthologies of student work; time schedules; and an anthology of student poems and teaching ideas.
