Literature for Children and Young People in a Pluralistic, Multicultural Society.
Ranta, Taimi M.
The materials in this guide to a multicultural literature component at the elementary school level reflect the need to reorient both teachers and students to the pluralistic nature of United States society. Since an effective way to deflate the myth that there are "typical Americans" of a particular color or cultural background is to have students read and discuss the literature of the many cultures that contribute to American society, the booklists for the component include fiction about Blacks, American Indians, Puerto Ricans, Chicanos, Jewish Americans, and Oriental Americans. Other materials in the guide provide program objectives, course requirements, course content, evaluation procedures, a general reading list, possible assignments arranged in a course schedule, an example of a student book evaluation card, and a lesson plan outline for student small group discussion with accompanying student worksheet.
