Characterization of the Aged in Literature.
This educational program, designed for the secondary level, focuses on the characterization of the aged in literature. The overall purpose of the unit is to help destroy the popular mythology about aging. The average American has a highly distorted view of what it is to grow old and the characteristics of that process. This program has the specific objectives of promoting a more realistic view of aging and its effects upon the individuals, and helping students realize that authors often reflect in their works both personal and societal attitudes of the period in which they write. Content and/or procedures, instructional materials, and a selected list of novels, short stories, and dramas depicting life in the latter years are included. It is hoped that this educational program will provide the essential first step toward changing attitudes as a nation and solving the aging problem. (Author/KA)
