The 1977-1978 evaluation of the TATTLETOOTH program included a dental screening of 5,071 school children in 5 counties. A group of 905 of these children were given, in addition, a post-test after receiving the dental education program. A control group of 672 were post-tested without having the program. Teachers were asked their opinions of the program, especially of the assistance of trained dental hygienists. Results of the screening suggest that dental problems are highly prevalent in this sample, and that a preventive program, concentrating on proper cleaning, is needed. The experimental dental evaluation indicates that the TATTLETOOTH dental-educational program is effective in improving cleaning effectiveness, and the teacher questionnaire responses support the involvement of dental hygienists as a valuable component of the program. The results suggest that more effort be made in the future to teach effective cleaning of molars. Extensive data tables are appended. (Author/CTM)
