This is the first part of a report of a large-scale national study of the induction of beginning teachers in Australia. The present research program was undertaken in the belief that this growing interest would be well-served by a better understanding of the nature of a person's transition from student in a teachers' college or university to teacher in a school and member of the teaching profession. To this end the research was designed to be both descriptive and analytic. There have been two distinct stages in the project, and the three chapters in this report relate to the first of these. The middle chapter is an annotated bibliography of the literature on induction and professional socialization. Details, insights, and analyses based on a systematic investigation of beginning teachers and their principals will be set out in the report of Stage II of the project. (Authors/JD)
