Filters for Women in Science.
Cobb, Jewel Plummer
This paper is concerned with certain stages or events in a female's life that may result in the encouragement or discouragement of a career in science. The author describes six "filters" through which a female must develop and which are either nonexistent or non-restrictive to males. These correspond to school levels (preschool through graduate school) and the socialization and cultural pressures within each. Women's attitudes towards mathematics are used as the example and are followed through the six filters. Suggestions are made for strategies to help eliminate some of the cultural and social barriers to potential professional female scientists. (MA)
