This instructional booklet is part of Learning Package #3 on self-concept development used in conjunction with the Child Development Training Program at Bemidji, Minnesota. This booklet is intended to help the parent to be aware of family processes and how one's self-concept affects those processes, and to develop skills in relating to their children. The booklet is divided into nine sections and emphasizes: (1) how the family contributes to the child's growth and development; (2) differing family values; (3) self-defeating patterns of parenting; (4) understanding the goals of children's behavior; (5) understanding interactions within the family structure; (6) principles of child-rearing: the democratic model; (7) teaching responsibility to children; (8) communication between parent and child; and (9) building self-esteem in the family. Also included are a list of suggested readings and a package evaluation form. (The entire Learning Package #3 consists of the instructional booklet containing reading materials and 16 written activities, various book selections and an audiotape entitled "Under Stress: Keeping Children Safe.")
