The Prevention of Preterm Birth: An Introduction to Some European Developments Aimed at the Prevention of Handicap.
Wynn, Margaret; Wynn, Arthur
The report presents information on the incidence and prevention of preterm births which are related to infant death and subsequent handicapping conditions. The first chapter analyzes statistics from Sweden, Britain, Scotland, Canada and the U.S. on optimum birthweight. European developments in the prevention of preterm birth are reviewed as well as limitations of the usefulness of preventing preterm birth. The importance of adequate antenatal care prevention services is stressed, and suggestions are made for improving care. Social, behavioral, and biological factors associated with preterm birth are described. (CL)
