Developed in West Virginia as part of a statewide effort to improve reading achievement through a competency based staff development program, this inservice instructional packet on recreational reading and personal development is one of five devised to present classroom teachers with the essential competencies and learner outcomes involved in developmental reading. The materials in this packet are designed to provide teachers with a knowledge of recreational reading and personal development skills, practice in assessing recreational reading and personal development in learners, opportunities to develop instructional strategies for recreational reading and personal development, and methods for evaluating teacher performance in providing for learner interests and affective involvement. The packet also contains guidelines for conducting the inservice program; the gestalt, rationale, objectives, and schedule for the program; a self-evaluation record; transparencies on recreational reading and personal development skills; a process discussion on writing competencies and learner outcomes; and an evaluation record for the inservice program.
