This Users Manual is the supporting documentation for the Public Use Data File from the National Longituidnal Study of the High School Class of 1972 (NLS). The data file contains certain merged data from the base year (1972), and first, second, and third follow-up NLS surveys, as described herein. NLS is designed to provide statistics on a national sample of students as they move out of the American high school system into the critical years of early adulthood. The five parts of the volume are: Introduction; Methodology; File Preparation; Contents and Organization of the Data File; and Technical Specifications. The Appendices in Volume I include: (A) Instrumentation; (B) Critical Items and Supporting Items in the First, Second, and Third Follow-up Questionnaires; (C) Index of Miscellaneous Codes; (D) Routing Patterns and Routing Codes; (E) Index of NLS Release Tape Variables; (F) Inputation of Grade Point Averages and Conversion of Grading Systems; (G) List of Region Codes and States Within Regions; (H) Definitions of Weighting Classes; (I) Response Rates by Sample Status of School; and (J) Definitions of Created Variables.
