Detailed Evaluation Report for the 1976-77 School Year for the E.O.F. Compensatory Project: "Compensatory Language Arts/Reading Program for Inner City Schools".
Edmonton Public School Board (Alberta).
A primary-level compensatory language arts and reading program for nine inner city schools in Edmonton, Alberta, is described briefly. During 1976-77 the program served 146 students, mostly in their first year in the program. Half of these were recommended to be returned to regular classes for the following year. Children were selected for the program on the basis of their having normal intelligence but having a problem with language arts or reading. Differences between pretests and posttests for an extensive test battery showed significant gains even when adjusted for changes in chronological age. Classroom teachers, compensatory teachers, principals, and parents responded favorably to the program and felt it was successful. Comments are made about the usefulness of specific tests and recommendations are made for revisions of the test battery. Statistical data describing the questionnaire responses are appended.
