Play Behavior.
Levy, Joseph
This book presents a discussion and analysis of various theories of play behavior. The book is divided into 12 chapters. The first chapter delineates 3 criteria (intrinsic motivation, suspension of reality or make-believe, and internal locus of control) that distinguish play from nonplay behavior. Chapter 2 reviews scientific research on the methods of understanding play behavior. Differences between inductive and deductive methods of research are briefly described. Chapter 3 focuses on the multitude of social, psychological, economic and environmental reasons for studying play behavior. The fourth chapter presents a conceptual paradigm within which the concept of play can be studied from an interdisciplinary approach. Chapters 5 and 10 review the major classical and contemporary (psychoanalytic, developmental, ecological, and socialization) theories of play behavior. Chapter 11 delineates the implications of a progressive definition of play on people and society in the future. In the final chapter, a large scale empirical study of children's competitive play, utilizing the play paradigm discussed earlier (chapter 4), is presented. An extensive bibliography is included.
