The Use of Pictorial Illustrations in Instruction: Current Findings and Implications for Further Research.
Thomas, James L.
Research literature indicates that haphazard selection techniques for the inclusion of pictures and illustrations in textbooks occur more frequently than do techniques employing empirical investigation. Current studies have explored a variety of factors related to the use of illustrations, such as color, time, age, achievement, and sex of the reader. Two areas receiving concentrated research are reading and science. A need is indicated for more research in the use of pictoral illustrations in facilitating specific learning objectives, in understanding the factors influencing the choice of these illustrations, and in developing research designs which will allow for the possibility of aptitude-treatment interactions.
