Senior Teachers: An Endangered Species.
Counts, George E.
The age of teachers is investigated as one factor demonstrating part of the cumulative effect of teacher turnover and as documentation of the inability of the public school system to retain senior teachers. Age data are analyzed for: (1) all teachers in the Missouri public school system for the 1976-1977 school year; (2) secondary school teachers by discipline; (3) persons in active teaching positions for the years 1937, '47, '51, '56, '61, '66, '71, and '76; (4) teachers still in the profession five years after given data years according to age; and (5) gain/loss in number of teachers within each age category five years after given data years. Causes of age imbalance, turnover, and retirement from the profession are discussed. (MJB)
