Applications of Secondary School Mathematics.
This text is based on the idea that teachers of mathematics at any level will find it advantageous to be able to point to interesting, useful, and diverse applications of the mathematics they teach. The first chapter describes several graphing techniques used for displaying data and finding meaningful relationships as a result. Subsequent chapters consider problems of current or historical interest in different fields. After some description of background information in the area of application, the text shows how the essential features are represented mathematically. For each topic, exercises are included that either develop the main ideas further or serve as concrete examples of the mathematics involved. The final chapter briefly considers some aspects of the process of mathematical modeling. An index of mathematical topics refers the reader to an appropriate chapter. The topics listed are: calculus, equations, exponents and logarithms, geometry, graphing, groups, matrices, modular arithmetic, percent, permutations and combinations, ratio and proportion, sequences, and trigonometry.
