Attitudes Toward the Mentally Retarded: A Review of the Selected Literature.
Wong, Nora; Perkins, Stanley A.
The paper examines the literature on public attitudes, professional attitudes, and peer attitudes toward the mentally retarded. Discussed are methodologies for attitude change through physical contact, knowledge exposure, and a combination of social contact and knowledge exposure. It is concluded that studies in the area of changing attitudes of the normal population toward the retarded are inconclusive. Six ingredients to promote the effect of contact on attitude change are proposed: cooperative interdependence, equality of status, norms favoring equality, success, acquaintance potential, and stereotype destruction.
