Recent Advances in the Study of Pre- and Early Linguistic Development Open New Perspectives for Early Language Intervention in Severely and Moderately Mentally Retarded Children.

The paper reviews research on and techniques for early linguistic intervention with retarded children. Outlined are principles upon which linguistic intervention should be based, a definition of early intervention, the rationale for early language and communication intervention, and principles for developmental prelinguistic and early linguistic intervention. Techniques are described for enhancing vocal communication, proto-conversation, and reference; facilitating object concept development and promoting representational mental activity and symbolic play before teaching receptive and expressive vocabulary; and facilitating combinatorial speech.
