The five papers that constitute this issue of the "Journal of the Arizona Communication and Theatre Association" represent interest in a direction for interpretation studies which has proved rewarding for traditional students as well as for people outside typical classroom settings. With literature firmly at the center, many teachers and scholars are expanding their view of both research and performance in interpretation to include creation of interpretation events, formulation of training and development programs, and studies in attitude change, small group development, leisure time activity, and self discovery. The authors of the articles have had personal experience with such an expanded view of the interpretation field: one with prison settings, one with women's awareness groups, one with content analysis of small groups in rehearsal situations, and one with liturgical settings. This issue concludes with a conversation with Arizona State University professor Janet G. Elsea, a pioneer in developing and teaching the concept of interpretation in its social contexts. (Author/JF)
