An Evaluation of Project LEAP, E.S.E.A. Title I Program of Medford, Massachusetts, 1976-1977.
Kaufman, Maurice; And Others
An Elementary and Secondary Education Title I program for the 1976-77 school year was conducted in public and parochial schools in Medford, Massachusetts. The program provided reading and language arts instruction, physical education, speech therapy, and counseling. Children in grades K-6 who scored below the fortieth percentile on school department achievement tests were eligible. The evaluators conducted on site observations and staff interviews. Data obtained on achievement tests, questionnaires, and checklists were analyzed. First graders were found to have made significant gains in word knowledge and word analysis, while second graders made gains in tests of word knowledge, word analysis, reading and spelling. Third through sixth graders made significant gains in tests of word knowledge, reading, language and spelling. Kindergarten children progressed in knowledge of letters and sounds and in aural comprehension. In addition, children selected for physical education improved in psychomotor development. There were consistent indications of growth in children's self confidence, responsibility, cooperation and interest. Parents found the program effective and helpful. (Author/GC)
