The University and the Foreign Student: A Financial Appraisal.
Komaniecka, Valentina
Despite the growing number of foreign students enrolled at our colleges, only minimal research has been devoted to the impact of these students on the nation's institutions of higher learning. This paper investigates the financial implications of international educational exchange for host campuses. The initial section presents an overview of foreign student enrollment at U.S. colleges and universities. The various sources of monetary support for international scholars (both graduate students and undergraduates) are then delineated; the data indicate that most foreigners studying in this country are self-supporting. The final section of the report analyzes the institutional viewpoint. Confronted with the increased financial pressures that face higher education, school administrators find it difficult to maintain and encourage student exchange programs. However, it is concluded that the multiple benefits derived from the presence of international youths on campus far exceed the costs. (Author)
