Thirty American and 30 Bristish first graders were administered a screening test to determine whether similar identifiable learning problems exist across cultures. Results of the Aston Index indicated significant differences between American and British Ss in one subtest of the Index's General Underlying Ability, and in two subtests of the Performance Ability measure. Findings were interpreted to provide limited acceptance of a hypothesis of no significant difference between American and British Ss. Eight predictors of reading were found, ranging from vocabulary age at the highest level to visual sequential memory pictorial at the lowest significantly predictive level. (CL)
