The National Study on Child Neglect and Abuse Reporting was begun in 1973 to establish the feasibility of a national clearinghouse for data on child abuse and neglect. At present, 31 States and 3 territories are fully participating in the study, while the other 19 States and the District of Columbia provide less inclusive data. Data reported by States include case information, descriptions of involved families and children and of alleged perpetrators, and types of abuse and neglect. Among fully participating States, 47% of the reported cases are validated. Among other findings reported are 1) a median annual family income on all cases of $5,051, well below the national average; 2) a greater relative importance of environmental stress factors in cases of neglect than in cases of abuse, where personal characteristics play a greater role; 3) natural parents comprise 83% of the alleged perpetrators; and 4) little difference in sexes of involved children.
